Albion Basin Wildflower Engagements | Maddie + Gavin

Albion Basin, nestled high in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah. During the summer months, this alpine meadow transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color, attracting photographers, hikers, and nature lovers from around the world. If you're looking to capture stunning wildflower photos and immerse yourself in a truly magical landscape, Albion Basin should be at the top of your list.

Why Albion Basin is a Wildflower Photography Dream For so Many:

  • Unparalleled Density and Variety: Albion Basin boasts an extraordinary concentration of wildflowers. From vibrant Indian Paintbrush and bluebells to delicate lupine and forget-me-nots, the variety is simply astonishing.

  • Dramatic Mountain Backdrop: The towering peaks of the Wasatch Range provide a stunning backdrop for your wildflower photos, adding depth and grandeur to your compositions.

  • Easy Access (Relatively): While it's an alpine environment, Albion Basin is relatively accessible, with a maintained dirt road leading to the heart of the meadows. The only hurtle is waiting in the line of cars

Planning Your Trip to Albion Basin:

  • Timing is Key: The peak wildflower season in Albion Basin typically occurs from mid-July to early August, but it can vary depending on the year's snowpack and weather conditions. Check local reports and social media for up-to-date information because it can open as early as late June. It normally closes in October before the first snowfalls.

  • Getting There:

    • From Salt Lake City, take I-215 east to Highway 210 (the Cottonwood Canyon Road).

    • Follow Highway sr-210 up Little Cottonwood canyon

    • Continue past the Alta ski area on the Albion Basin Road and make it to the pay booth.

    • The 2 mile road to the parking area is generally well-maintained, but it can be bumpy and dusty.

    • Parking can be limited, especially during peak season, so arrive early because the entry booth follows a one car out one car in to ensure the parking lot does not overflow. They do not allow any roadside parking after the booth. I normally suggest parking at Catherine’s pass to access the actual Albion Basin. But there are two other parking spots at Cecret Lake Trailhead.

  • Permits and Fees: A $10-15 fee is required to enter Albion Basin. As well as a $10-$25 for roadside parking depending on the day and location(s) planning on stopping at for parking in either canyon

  • Altitude Awareness: Albion Basin sits at an elevation of over 9,000 feet. If you're not accustomed to high altitudes, take it easy and drink plenty of water.

  • Weather Preparedness: Mountain weather can change rapidly. Be prepared for cooler temperatures, wind, and potential thunderstorms. Bring layers of clothing, a waterproof jacket, and sunscreen. Even on sunny forcast days I have spent time running to the car and waiting 30 minutes to wait the rain out and then go back in the mud to finish photos so be mindful of that.

Things to consider:

  • Albion basin is a very poplular photo spot and has such a limited window of opportunity so plan on arriving early and waiting as long as 45 minutes to get to the pay booth

  • Expect parking to be full and for them to not allow anyone up until a car comes down

  • Weekdays and early mornings are far less busy than evenings or weekends.

  • They are very strict about staying on paths, not going into the flowers and they do have rope strings all around

  • Because it is a popular location there are times of just waiting in line for a spot and usually there are people all around you, in the background or even watching you as they wait for the spot.

  • There are some areas with some walking and less flowers that is less conjested if it is necesary to go on the weekend or evening.

Beyond Photography:

Albion Basin offers more than just stunning photo opportunities. Take time to:

  • Hike the Catherine Pass Trail for panoramic views.

  • Enjoy a picnic amidst the wildflowers.

  • Simply relax and soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Albion Basin is a truly special place and I love photographing couples and families here. If you are interested in me photographing your session here reach out and lets get it in the books and planned. I can’t wait to hear from you.
