Farm Lifestyle Family | Krause Family
Getting to see how other families live and enjoy their life together brings me so much joy to photograph. I had been wanting to photograph a family who had a homestead or farm and I was so excited to have the Krause family reach out and to want to have photos that celebrated their life and shows what their life is currently like with chickens, ducks, a garden and a new little sister for the two boys.
I love how the time with them just flowed and the boys just played and showed me their chores with the animals and I got to document all those special moments without forcing any poses. The kids felt so comfortable and it is really a reason I urge families to consider lifestyle family photos, especially if their kids have a hard time standing still and posing for upwards of an hour.

Dreaming of capturing your family's authentic spirit amidst the rustic charm of a farm? A farm lifestyle photoshoot offers a unique opportunity to create timeless images that reflect your family's connection to nature, simplicity, and each other. Whether you live on a farm or simply appreciate the rural aesthetic, here's how to plan a memorable and heartwarming farm lifestyle photoshoot:
Setting the Scene: Location, Location, Location!
Your Own Farm (If Applicable): If you're fortunate enough to live on a farm, you have the perfect backdrop right at your doorstep. Explore your property for picturesque locations: barns, fields, orchards, animal pens, and old farm equipment can all add character to your photos.
Local Farms and Pumpkin Patches: Many farms open their doors for photoshoots, especially during seasonal events like pumpkin patches or sunflower fields. Contact local farms and inquire about their photography policies and fees.
Rural Parks and Nature Reserves: Look for parks with barns, open fields, or wooded areas that evoke a farm-like atmosphere.
Consider the Season: Each season offers unique photographic opportunities. Spring brings blossoming trees and baby animals, summer showcases lush greenery and golden fields, autumn offers vibrant foliage and pumpkin patches, and winter provides a serene, snowy backdrop.
Defining Your Vision: Planning your outfit
Rustic Charm: Embrace the natural beauty of the farm with earthy tones, denim, plaid, and vintage-inspired clothing.
Bohemian Vibes: Incorporate flowing dresses, floral prints, and natural textures for a whimsical and free-spirited feel.
Modern Farmhouse: Opt for clean lines, neutral colors, and simple silhouettes for a contemporary take on farm style.
Decide on Activities: Do you want to capture your family interacting with animals, picking produce, playing in hay bales, or simply enjoying the scenery? Consider activities that are meaningful and authentic to your family.
Wardrobe Choices: Comfort and Authenticity
Comfort is Key: Choose clothing that allows your family to move freely and comfortably. Remember, you'll likely be walking, sitting, and interacting with the environment.
Coordinate, Don't Match: Aim for a cohesive color palette rather than identical outfits. Earthy tones, neutrals, and muted colors work well in a farm setting.
Layer Up: Be prepared for changing weather conditions by bringing layers of clothing.
Accessorize with Purpose: Hats, scarves, boots, and jewelry can add personality to your photos, but keep them simple and authentic to the setting. Wear shoes that make sense to the location and are fit for moving around.
Timing and Lighting: Golden Hour Magic
Golden Hour: The hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise offer the most flattering and magical light for outdoor photography. Mid day can be the best for indoors or super overcast days.
Overcast Days: Overcast days can also be ideal for farm photoshoots, as the diffused light eliminates harsh shadows.
Consider the Time of Day: Be mindful of the sun's position and avoid shooting during midday, when the light is harsh and unflattering.
Post-Photoshoot Considerations:
Choosing Your Photos: Work with your photographer to select your favorite images.
Printing and Displaying: Consider printing your photos on high-quality paper or canvas to create lasting memories.
Creating a Photo Album or Scrapbook: Compile your favorite photos into a photo album or scrapbook to share with family and friends.
A farm lifestyle photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture your family's unique story and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. By planning ahead and working with a skilled photographer, you can create stunning images that reflect the beauty and authenticity of rural life.
