the OUTFIT GUIDE

When I got engaged and was getting ready for engagement photos I cannot tell you how stressful picking an outfit for the photos was, I was worried about what would look good, how would it look at the location that we were going to, how to coordinate with my fiance… which is why I created an outfit guide! By the end of this I want you to be able to:

  1. Be confident in the outfit you choose

  2. Know which colors to choose

  3. Know how to break down clothes into 3 Categories (casual, everyday and formal)

If you are able to go into the photoshoot feeling good, confident and ultimately having an outfit that does translate well into pictures then the experience will be so much better and filled with a lot less worry and stress.

TIP 1: MAKE IT YOU!

I just want to clarify that this guide is just a resource and I am one who believes every “rule” is meant to be broken and fashion and creative expression is SO important! This guide just contains the “recipe” for a outfit that will look good in any location and combo of outfits.

TIP 2: NEUTRALS

I often have couples ask which colors work best with the locations as well as go good with coordinating outfits and my answer every time will be neutrals! Neutrals are where it is at! Blacks, whites, tans, levi blues… you won’t go wrong with this combo… EVER! Full neutrals, neutrals with a pop of color either way this is almost a sure way that your outfit will look great in any location and with your partners outfit as well.

TIP 3: MUTED COLORS (PASTELS OR DARK)

The safe way to approach color if you are hesitant or not super comfortable with it would be to stick to very light hues of the color or dark hues of the color. ex (light green or dark green like pictured below… NOT lime green or intense color wheel green… unless it is part of the creative vision)

TIP 4: LAYERS!

Layers are your friends, jackets, necklaces, hats, scarfs, double layer shirt, tights, vests, etc… It gives a lot more depth to photos and allows a quick and easy change up to your look. It is also one of the best ways to personalize your outfit and make it you!

TIP 5: MIX UP THE STYLE OF YOUR 2 OUTFITS

I highly recommend 2 outfits if your shoot is more than a hour (excluding family session). The reason why I recommend this is because if there are two outfits then the gallery looks much more diverse, has two different vibes and just overall gives you much more variety.

I recommend 2 outfits from different categories: casual, everyday, formal

TIP 6: SHOULD I BUY NEW OR USE WHAT I HAVE?

Either way is perfect, I have had clients who have bought whole new wardrobes (if your wallet allows this it can be really fun and a great treat to yourself before the shoot), I have had clients curate two beautiful outfits from things they already had, and I even had a couple who thrifted 3 outfits each for $29… THE DAY OF!!! Can you believe that?! (I would for sure recommend figuring out outfits beforehand in case you aren’t so lucky with shopping but it really is amazing!)
